How to set Environment Variables in Linux

Hi Guys, This is one of main issue behind problem in installing a software package in Linux.Suppose you want to install a package in your system, but the installer could not resolved the dependencies because it is unable to find the required package in your system, but you have already installed the required libraries or the required package. It is very frustating.

Take an example,I was installing Hadoop on Fedora,I have installed the jdk1.6u23.But when I tried to install Hadoop,It is showing that Hadoop needs jdk1.6 or higher version.

The reason is that I had not set the environment variable $JAVA_HOME.

To solve this error I set the environment variable:

$ export JAVA_HOME=/path/to/jdk/installation/directory
$ export PATH=${PATH}:${JAVA_HOME}/bin

/usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256

Hi All, Today while I was working on hadoop, I have changed many file permissions to make it work,For some purpose I had to restart my 64bit Fedora 14.I found that my system got hanged and a pop was showing with this error : "/usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256"  and I could not able to log into my account.

I got the solution it is due to file permission in /tmp directory. So,I changed the file permission of /tmp directory to 777 and now it is working properly.

BARCAMP in Guwahati(Assam), India

BarCamp Guwahati

"Hello OSGi" presented by Me and Nabamita
BarCamp for the first time in North-East of India was organized by Zaloni Inc. in their Guwahati Development Centre on 23rd Oct' 2010.

What is a BarCamp? From the origins in Palo Alto, BarCamp is an unconference, meant for knowledge sharing and learning.

Looks Cool !!
In details, A BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. The name BarCamp was inspired as a complement to FooCamp, a private tech gathering run by Tim OReilly.

The first ever BarCamp was held in Palo Alto, California, from August 19-21, 2005 in the offices of Socialtext. It was organized in less than one week from concept to event, with 200 attendees. Since then, BarCamps have been held in over 350 cities around the world in North America, South America, Africa, Europe, the MIddle East, Australasia and Asia.

Hadoop Session by Ben Sharma,Founder of Zaloni Inc.
The focus of BarCamp Guwahati was emerging open source technologies.Barcamp Guwahati invited technologists, programmers, developers, designers, and Geeks to a day long of unadulterated geeky Barcamp fun.

The number of attendies was good. There was good response from the attendies and those who were unable to attend the BarCamp Guwahati. The Session was started from 10:30 am IST sharp. It was a huge success.

Having Fun with my colleagues
The details you can get from the official website of the Barcamp Guwahati.
I have given one session on OSGi titled "Hello OSGi" along with Nabamita who is also a Software Engineer.

Two of the attendies praised us for the session and they told me that they had heard about OSGi for the first time. They really appreciated Zaloni Inc. for organizing the BarCamp in Guwahati.Hope to see more BarCamps here in North-East of India.

Network + Battery + Sound Icon missing from Top Panel in Fedora.

I was frustrated that my Network , Battery , Sound Icon was missed from many days in my Fedora 12 , I had tried many ways to bring it back but I failed . I did tried accessing all the options in system > preferences and system > admin.

I have tried by Right clicking on the Panel , A pop up comes up like Add to panel , There I didn't find anything related to my problem.

But the solution was there only But I had missed one option "Notification Area".

I got the solution : Click on the top panel > add to panel> notification area.

Just try it once !!!

Exception in thread “main” java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

When this exception occurs, it means java runs out of memory.

You can increase memory(heap size) by run java including these parameters:

-Xms[initial heap size] -Xmx[maximum heap size]

For example, set initial heap size to 128m and maximum to 256m.

java -Xms128m -Xmx256m

In NetBeans, simply goes to Project Properties –> Run.
Then you can add these parameters in VM Options.

Android Platform Architecture

What is Android?

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. The Android SDK provides the tools and APIs necessary to begin developing applications on the Android platform using the Java programming language.

Features

* Application framework enabling reuse and replacement of components
* Dalvik virtual machine optimized for mobile devices
* Integrated browser based on the open source WebKit engine
* Optimized graphics powered by a custom 2D graphics library; 3D graphics based on the OpenGL ES 1.0 specification (hardware acceleration optional)
* SQLite for structured data storage
* Media support for common audio, video, and still image formats (MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, PNG, GIF)
* GSM Telephony (hardware dependent)
* Bluetooth, EDGE, 3G, and WiFi (hardware dependent)
* Camera, GPS, compass, and accelerometer (hardware dependent)
* Rich development environment including a device emulator, tools for debugging, memory and performance profiling, and a plugin for the Eclipse IDE

Android Architecture

The following diagram shows the major components of the Android operating system. Each section is described in more detail below.

Applications

Android will ship with a set of core applications including an email client, SMS program, calendar, maps, browser, contacts, and others. All applications are written using the Java programming language.

Application Framework

By providing an open development platform, Android offers developers the ability to build extremely rich and innovative applications. Developers are free to take advantage of the device hardware, access location information, run background services, set alarms, add notifications to the status bar, and much, much more.

Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.

Underlying all applications is a set of services and systems, including:

* A rich and extensible set of Views that can be used to build an application, including lists, grids, text boxes, buttons, and even an embeddable web browser
* Content Providers that enable applications to access data from other applications (such as Contacts), or to share their own data
* A Resource Manager, providing access to non-code resources such as localized strings, graphics, and layout files
* A Notification Manager that enables all applications to display custom alerts in the status bar
* An Activity Manager that manages the lifecycle of applications and provides a common navigation backstack

Libraries

Android includes a set of C/C++ libraries used by various components of the Android system. These capabilities are exposed to developers through the Android application framework. Some of the core libraries are listed below:

* System C library - a BSD-derived implementation of the standard C system library (libc), tuned for embedded Linux-based devices
* Media Libraries - based on PacketVideo's OpenCORE; the libraries support playback and recording of many popular audio and video formats, as well as static image files, including MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, and PNG
* Surface Manager - manages access to the display subsystem and seamlessly composites 2D and 3D graphic layers from multiple applications
* LibWebCore - a modern web browser engine which powers both the Android browser and an embeddable web view
* SGL - the underlying 2D graphics engine
* 3D libraries - an implementation based on OpenGL ES 1.0 APIs; the libraries use either hardware 3D acceleration (where available) or the included, highly optimized 3D software rasterizer
* FreeType - bitmap and vector font rendering
* SQLite - a powerful and lightweight relational database engine available to all applications

Android Runtime

Android includes a set of core libraries that provides most of the functionality available in the core libraries of the Java programming language.

Every Android application runs in its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently. The Dalvik VM executes files in the Dalvik Executable (.dex) format which is optimized for minimal memory footprint. The VM is register-based, and runs classes compiled by a Java language compiler that have been transformed into the .dex format by the included "dx" tool.

The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.

Linux Kernel

Android relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.

My first outing from NorthEast (journey to Noida sector 12-22)(contd..)

Before my journey starts ...

The first question that came to my mind was "Where to put-up??" . Obviously , I had to find some accomodation.

I started thinking about my friends .Then it struck my mind that Raj kumar,my childhood friend is doing a job at Tech Mahindra. He and his big bro are staying together at Noida sector 12-22.and incidently my another friend Pradip was also staying with them.I told Raj and he was happy to hear that we were going to meet each other after 9 years.

My journey Started.......

In my compartment I met a family from Haryana along with some Army persons.I started talking with the jawans about their life in Indian Army .

I was quite impressed , they told me about wars and all about their conquests. But they had a good life there inside the Army. They asked me about my family,my education and we exchanged a few more words.

They asked me " Why dont you join the Indian Army ?" saying that there are good vacancies for Engineers in our Indian Army.

To be continued.....

Creating an Android Development Environment

The Android Software Development Kit supports Windows (XP and Vista), Linux (tested on Ubuntu Dapper Drake, but any recent Linux distro should work), and Mac OS X (10.4.8 or later, Intel platform only) as host development environments. Installation of the SDK is substantially the same for any of the operating systems, and most of this description applies equally to all of them. Where the procedure differs, we will clearly tell you what to do for each environment:

Install JDK: The Android SDK requires JDK version 5 or version 6. If you already have one of those installed, skip to the next step. In particular, Mac OS X comes with the JDK version 5 already installed, and many Linux distributions include a JDK. If the JDK is not installed, go to and you'll see a list of Java products to download. You want JDK 6 Update n for your operating system, where n is 6 at the time of this writing.

Windows (XP and Vista)

Select the distribution for "Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language."

Read, review, and accept Sun's license for the JDK. (The license has become very permissive, but if you have a problem with it, alternative free JDKs exist.)

Once the download is complete, a dialog box will ask you whether you want to run the downloaded executable. When you select "Run," the Windows Installer will start up and lead you through a dialog to install the JDK on your PC.

Linux

Select the distribution for "Linux self-extracting file."

Read, review, and accept Sun's license for the JDK. (The license has become very permissive, but if you have a problem with it, alternative free JDKs exist.)

You will need to download the self-extracting binary to the location in which you want to install the JDK on your filesystem. If that is a system-wide directory (such as /usr/local), you will need root access. After the file is downloaded, make it executable (chmod +x jdk-6version-linux-i586.bin), and execute it. It will self-extract to create a tree of directories.

Mac OS X

Mac OS X comes with JDK version 5 already loaded.

Install Eclipse: The Android SDK requires Eclipse version 3.3 or later. If you do not have that version of Eclipse installed yet, you will need to go to to get it, and you might as well get version 3.4 (also known as Ganymede), since that package includes the required plug-ins mentioned in the next step. You want the version of the Eclipse IDE labeled "Eclipse IDE for Java Developers," and obviously you want the version for your operating system. Eclipse will ask you to select a mirror site, and will then start the download.

Windows (XP or Vista)

The Eclipse download comes as a big ZIP file that you install by extracting the files to your favorite directory. For this book, we'll assume that you extracted to C:/eclipse. Eclipse is now installed, but it will not show up in your Start menu of applications. You may want to create a Windows shortcut for C:/eclipse/eclipse.exe and place it on your desktop, in your Start menu, or someplace else where you can easily find it.

Linux and Mac OS X

Note that, as of this writing, the version of Eclipse installed if you request it on Ubuntu Hardy Heron is 3.2.2, which does not contain all the plug-ins needed for Android. The Eclipse download comes as a big tarball (.gz file) that you install by extracting the files to your favorite directory. For this book, we'll assume that you extracted to /usr/lib/eclipse. The executable itself is located in that directory and is named eclipse.

Check for required plug-ins: You can skip this step if you just downloaded a current version of Eclipse as we recommended. If you are using a preinstalled version of Eclipse, you need to make sure you have the Java Development Tool (JDT) and Web Standard Tools (WST) plug-ins. You can easily check to see whether they are installed by starting Eclipse and selecting menu options "Windows Preferences...". The list of preferences should include one for "Java" and one for either "XML" or "Web and XML." If they aren't on the list, the easiest thing to do is reinstall Eclipse, as described in the previous step. Installing "Eclipse IDE for Java Developers" will automatically get the needed plug-ins.

Install Android SDK: This is where you should start if you already have the right versions of Eclipse and the JDK loaded. The Android SDK is distributed through Google's Android site, . You will need to read, review, and accept the terms of the license to proceed. When you get to the list of downloads, you will see a table of distributions. Select the one for your operating system (XP and Vista use the same distribution). The package (file) names include the release number. For example, as this is written, the latest version of the SDK is 1.1_r1, so the filename for Windows is android-sdk-windows-1.1_r1.zip.

For versions 3.3 and later of Eclipse, the Android download site provides directions about how to install the plug-in through Eclipse's software updates utility. If you're using Eclipse 3.2 or the software update technique doesn't work for you, download the SDK from the Android site and install it using instructions in the next paragraph.

The file you download is another archive file, as with Eclipse: a ZIP file on Windows, a tar-zipped file for Linux and MacOS X. Do the same thing as for Eclipse: extract the archive file to a directory where you want to install Android, and make a note of the directory name (you'll need it in step 6). The extraction will create a directory tree containing a bunch of subdirectories, including one called tools.

Update the environment variables: To make it easier to launch the Android tools, add the tools directory to your path.

On Windows XP, click on Start, then right-click on My Computer. In the pop-up menu, click on Properties. In the resulting System Properties dialog box, select the Advanced tab. Near the bottom of the Advanced tab is a button, "Environment Variables," that takes you to an Environment Variables dialog. User environment variables are listed in the top half of the box, and System environment variables in the bottom half. Scroll down the list of System environment variables until you find "Path"; select it, and click the "Edit" button. Now you will be in an Edit System Variable dialog that allows you to change the environment variable "Path." Add the full path of the tools directory to the end of the existing Path variable and click "OK." You should now see the new version of the variable in the displayed list. Click "OK" and then "OK" again to exit the dialog boxes.

On Windows Vista, click on the Microsoft "flag" in the lower left of the desktop, then right-click on Computer. At the top of the resulting display, just below the menu bar, click on "System Properties." In the column on the left of the resulting box, click on "Advanced system settings." Vista will warn you with a dialog box that says "Windows needs your permission to continue"; click "Continue." Near the bottom of the System Properties box is a button labeled "Environment Variables" that takes you to an Environment Variables dialog. User environment variables are listed in the top half of the box, and System environment variables in the bottom half. Scroll down the list of System environment variables until you find "Path"; select it, and click the "Edit" button. Now you will be in an Edit System Variable dialog that allows you to change the environment variable "Path." Add the full path of the tools directory to the end of the existing Path variable, and click "OK." You should now see the new version of the variable in the displayed list. Click "OK" and then "OK" again to exit the dialog boxes.

On Linux, the PATH environment variable can be defined in your ~/.bashrc ~/.bash_profile file. If you have either of those files, use a text editor such as gedit, vi, or Emacs to open the file and look for a line that exports the PATH variable. If you find such a line, edit it to add the full path of the tools directory to the path. If there is no such line, you can add a line like this:

export PATH=${PATH}:your_sdk_dir/tools
where you put the full path in place of your_sdk_dir.

On Mac OS X, look for a file named .bash_profile in your home directory (note the initial dot in the filename). If there is one, use an editor to open the file and look for a line that exports the PATH variable. If you find such a line, edit it to add the full path of the tools directory to the path. If there is no such line, you can add a line like this:

export PATH=${PATH}:your_sdk_dir/tools
where you put the full path in place of your_sdk_dir.

Install the Android plug-in (ADT): Throughout this book, we will make use of the Android Development Tool plug-in that Google supplies for use in building Android applications. The plug-in is installed in much the same way as any other Eclipse plug-in:

Start Eclipse, if it's not already running.

From the menu bar, select "Help Software Updates Find and Install...".

In the Install/Update dialog, select "Search for new features to install" and click on "Next."

In the Install dialog, click on "New Remote Site." A "New Update Site" dialog pops up. Enter a name for the plug-in ("Android Plugin" will do), and the URL for updates: . Click "OK."

The new site should now appear in the list of sites on the Install dialog. Click "Finish."

In the Search Results dialog, select the checkbox for "Android Plugin Developer Tools" and click "Next."

The license agreement for the plug-in appears. Read it, and if you agree, select "Accept terms of the license agreement" and click "Next." Click "Finish."

You will get a warning that the plug-in is not signed. Choose to install it anyway by clicking "Install All."

Restart Eclipse.

After Eclipse restarts, you need to tell it where the SDK is located. From the menu bar, select "Window Preferences." In the Preferences dialog, select "Android" in the left column.

Use the "Browse" button to navigate to the place you installed the Android SDK, and click on "Apply," then on "OK."

Congratulations—you have installed a complete Android development environment without spending a penny.

My first outing from NorthEast (journey to Noida sector 12-22)

I am going to tell you all about my journey from Guwahati to Noida , sector 12-22 in the year Dec 2009.

I had never been out of Assam from my Child Hood.

So I was very excited to travel out of Assam for the first time .

I had tried many times to convince my parents that I want to go outside Assam at least for one time .

Due to some problems I was not able to make it . I thought after getting my B.E results I would go to Bangalore and I would search job .

My brother advised me not to go there since at that time the world was suffering from Recession , So it would be very difficult to get job there .

Ok let me introduce my brother , My bro 's name is Firoz Ali Ahmed , He has done his B.Tech in Civil Engg. from NIT Silchar in the year 2004,presently he is working as a Senior Technical Officer in Ambuja Cements Limited , Guwahati . My brother is very brilliant and he is a good responsible person and kind hearted man . He always guides me to take good decisions and he is like a good friend and very helpful in nature. I will continue about him later . let me continue from where I have left about my journey .

Then one of my senior told me that Oracle is recruiting Freshers , and he told me to apply there . I was very excited that as I was going to appear for exams of such a famed company and I started preparing for the Oracle Online Written test .

A few week later I got an email that I had cleared the Test and My Interview was scheduled on 3rd December 2009 . I had decided to appear for the same and told my parents and bro that I want to appear , they said "yes, You Must Go ".

My Brother arranged my Train Ticket on 29 th Dec. And my journey started there ......

I will tell you after this, tomorrow ......So , be with me ...

Hard Work comes before Smart Work ...

Hi all,Let me tell you from my experience .

After passing my BE exams , I joined a Software Company , it is headquartered in Guwahati. There I joined as a Software Developer(Trainee) .

My interview was on 21st August 2009 and I joined on 24th August 2009.

There I was given the Asterisk Domain.Asterisk falls under Telecom Domain.

It was very new to me. Then I started hardworking to learn Asterisk as soon as possible such that I could be involved in a live project . It tooks me about 1 months to gather knowledge about Asterisk with practical implementations.

It was my hard work that helped me in learning Asterisk . Now I am capable to give Asterisk training to anyone .

After that I had been involved in a live project .Now hard work could not do the role , now smart work comes into play . And yes with the smart work I took the project progress from 20% to 90%.

After two months from my joining, One of my senior told me that Android will take the world market in Mobile Domain , It was like a challenge for me and I am always interested in learning challenging things like Frameworks , programming languages .

So I started learning Android from my home .

Then I started Android Programming and I have developed 3 applications yet and I will never stop doing Android programming.

Guys don't afraid of learning new technologies !!! At least Give a try.

First do hard work , grab the basic concepts and then you will be able to do smart work !!!!

Who is accountable for the late delivery of a module or project ??

Today I got a good topic for discussion . I think that each and every person who are related with the module or project are responsible for the project or module delivery .Because all are related with each other .

What I mean is that...If A has a dependency upon B. B should deliver the work to A in the proposed time , such that A can do his work and deliver to C if C has a dependency upon A.

This is the dependency cycle of a module or project delivery.

All the accountable persons be carefull !!!

Your negligence might lead to late the delivery of the module or project.

Help each other guys ... Its a team effort!! ...

Team Work is very important in Software Development !!!!!

Hi all , I am correct in saying that Team Work is most important thing in Software Development . The persons like software developers , team lead , project managers etc that are involved in building a software should work as a team . There are many reasons behind it . One of the reasons that i think is that one developer think about solving a problem or issue that comes up during development in many ways , but now he is unable to solve it , but if another developer helps him in solving his problem , it might works.Because they would now try to find the solution collectively and i think they would definitely find the solution and i am saying it from my experience.

We should work as a team , because unity is strength.

So what do you think , am i correct ? Please leave your comments.
